OVSYANIKO-KULIKOVSKY, Nikolai Dmitrievich (1768-1846)
Symphony No. 21 in g minor
It seems that this symphony was the handiwork of Mikhail Emmanuilovich Goldstein (1917-1989). The Symphony was 'discovered' in 1948 by him in the archives of the Odessa Conservatory, where he was then a librarian. It was premiered in Odessa and Kiev in 1948, and published in 1951 by the Soviet State Music Publishers and edited by A.G. Svechnikov for the modern orchestra. OVSYANIKO-KULIKOVSKY was an actual historical figure and landowner who had presented his serf orchestra to the Odessa Theater in 1810. Goldstein immigrated to East Germany in 1964, leaving the madness of this hoax behind him. [See Allan Ho and Dmitry Feofanov, Biographical Dictionary of Russian/Soviet Composers (Greenwood Press, 1989), pp. 182-183.]

Paul Miller confirmed that JVC VICC 40123, Artia MK 1580, and Urania US 5162-CD are all identical using variable speed recorders and by making A-B comparisons. Hiroshi Yasuda indicated and Kenzo Amoh confirmed that Praga PR 254017 and BMG(Japan) BVCX 4026 are identical, since the timings of the individual movements are same, and, furthermore, because PR 254017 sounds like a studio recording. Praga PR 254017 incorrectly claims to be the live recording on 1962/1/6 in Prague. JVC VDC 1122 incorrectly claims to be the concert at the Grand Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic.

CD: Arkadia CGDI 714.2, 2 disc set
Hunt 2HUNTCD 714 claims the performance came from the 1961/8/14 live performance in Bergen, but this date is dubious. Mravinsky gave a concert on June 12 in Helsinki (See Shostakovich's 5th in BROADCASTS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION.) and a concert on June 24 in Bergen (See Beethoven's 3rd.). The date of this recording is probably some day in June of that year. The Bergen Festival usually starts around the birthday of Edvard Grieg, June 15.

MISATTRIBUTIONS, UNCERTAIN RECORDINGS, AND FAKES
Glazunov: Symphony No. 8
WERM3-178 attributes the recording on Old Melodiya D 01460/1 to Mravinsky/Leningrad Philharmonic, while B-196 attributes it to Boris Khaikin/Leningrad Philharmonic. Frank Forman's copy of the disc reads Khaikin.
Glinka: Ruslan and Ludmila: March of the Black Sea Sailors
Though B-210 lists this work on Melodiya SM 02863/4, SM 02863/4 does not include this work, but includes the Overture.
Glinka: Valse-Fantasie for Orchestra in b minor
Multisonic CD 310269-2 attributes this recording to Mravinsky/USSR State Symphony Orchestra recorded in 1986 as the recording of the Moscow Radio. The conductor is probably Yevgeni Svetlanov.
Schubert: Symphony No. 9, "The Great"
Unknown date and venue, Studio; RE: na
LP: Zafiro ZL 406 (1983)
Spanish LP Zafiro ZL 406 (1983) claims that Mravinsky conducted the Leningrad Philharmonic on the recording and that the disc was manufactured under license from Melodiya. However, Mravinsky once told to Aleksandr Nevzorov that, while he was fond of and much interested in this work, he never conducted it. Kenzo Amoh compared this recording and Melodiya S10 16099/100 (1981) recorded in 1980 with the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra conducted by Aleksandr Dmitriev, and found that both are identical, since the timings of the individual movements are exactly same.
Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 1
Unknown date and venue, Live, Monaural; RE: na
Violin: Leonid Kogan
LP: Hall of Fame HOF 512
LP: Hall of Fame HOFS 512, Electronic simulated stereo
James Creighton incorrectly attributes this recording to Kogan and Kirill Kondrashin/ Moscow Philharmonic. Kogan made two recordings of this concerto with Kirill Kondrashin/ Moscow Philharmonic. One is the 1962 Moscow studio recording (Melodiya LP D 8451/2, Shinsekai LP SMK 7562), and the other is the 1966 Moscow live recording (Revelation RV 10084). Kogan's other recordings of this work are with Yevgeni Svetlanov/USSR State Symphony Orchestra (1976 live, Melodiya LP S10 30917/8) and with Irwin Hoffman/ Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1966 live, Radiothon CD CSO CD95-2). Paul Miller compared HOF 512, Shinsekai SMK 7562, and Melodiya S10 30917/8 by using variable speed tape recorders to make A-B comparions, and found that all are distinct. Furthermore, Kenzo Amoh confirmed that HOF 512, Revelation RV 10084, Radiothon CSO CD95-2 and Mravinsky's recordings with David Oistrakh (1956 Leningrad and 1957 Prague) are distinct. Neither Aleksandra Vavilina (Mrs. Mravinsky, former principal flutist of the Leningrad Philharmonic) nor Yelizaveta Gilels (Mrs. Kogan, violinist) know about this recording. The performers on Hall of Fame HOF 512 have so far eluded every effort of the compilers to identify. This disc is shown in James Creighton's Discopaedia of the Violin, First edition published in 1971.

Violin: Ruggiero Ricci
Symphony Orchestra of USSR
CD: One Eleven EPR 95030 (1996)
Aleksandra Vavilina (Mrs. Mravinsky, former principal flutist of the Leningrad Philharmonic) does not know about this recording. Ruggiero Ricci performed with the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1962 and 1963 according to Fomin's "Leningrad State Philharmonic", but conductors and works are not shown.
Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 and 6
Unknown date and venue, Live; RE: na
CD: Halloo HAL 09/10 (1997), 2 disc set
Kenzo Amoh confirmed that symphonies nos. 4 and 6 are identical with the DG 1960 studio recordings, although noises (coughs) are placed in the beginning of some movements, and an audiences applause after the finale. Furthermore, Kenzo Amoh confirmed that symphony no. 5 is identical with the 1978 Vienna live recording.

Kenzo Amoh asked Aleksandra Vavilina-Mravinskaya whether or not this recording and the recording of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, both listed by Aleksandr Nevzorov in his article on Melodiya, are truly preserved, at a party in Tokyo in October 1994. Her answer was "Yes" for both recordings. After that the latter was issued by Russian Disc (RDCD 10906). Someone says this recording does not exist any more. Frankly speaking, the compilers do not know which is the case. Possibly Rostropovich may know it.

SUPPLEMENT
Birth: Yevgeni Aleksandrovich Mravinsky was born on June 4, 1903 in St Petersburg as the son of Aleksandr Konstantinovich and Yelizaveta Nikolayevna. His father was a lawyer of the rank of fourth grade secretary. His mother from the Filkov family had a beautiful voice. His aunt Yevgeniya Konstantinova Mravina (1864-1914) was a leading soloist at the Marinsky Opera Theater. "I grew up in a family where music was well known and cultivated," recalled he later. His parents started piano lessons for their son, given by Valentina Avgstovna Storet, when he was six years old. It was at this age that Mravinsky went to the Opera Theater for the first time, and he was much impressed with Tchaikovsky's ballet The Sleeping Beauty.
First appointment: In the autumn of 1924 Mravinsky entered the composition department of the Leningrad Conservatory, then in 1927 transferred to the conducting department where he took the class of professors Nikolai Malko (1883-1961) and Aleksandr Gauk (1893-1963). Before entering the Conservatory, he had a job as a regular pianist for E. Vecheslova-Snetkova at the Leningrad Ballet School, and then in the spring of 1931 he was asked to conduct Glazunov's ballet The Seasons at the Ballet School of the Marinsky Opera. He had had close connection with the Marinsky Opera Theater since 1921. At the end of 1931, he was appointed an assistant conductor at the Marinsky Opera Theater where he performed mostly ballets such as Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Boris Asafiev's Fountain of Bakhchisarai, etc.
First conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra: In the summer of 1931 after graduated from the Conservatory, Mravinsky was selected among 3 graduates (the others being Y. Pazovsky and M. Shikolnikov) to conduct the Leningrad Philharmonic for the first time. The concert was held at the Garden of Rest where he conducted Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Leonora Overture No. 3, Musorgsky's Sorochinsky Fair Overture, etc.
World premieres: Mravinsky premiered many works of Soviet/Russian composers which include:
Shostakovich's other works: Cello Concerto No. 1 (Mstislav Rostropovich), Violin Concerto No. 1 (David Oistrakh) and Song of the Forests
Aram Khachaturyan: Symphony No. 3 (Symphonic Poem)
Nikolai Myaskovsky: Symphony No. 4
Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6
Vadim Salmanov: Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4
Georgi Sviridov: Piano Concerto (Pavel Serebryakov)
Galina Ustovolskaya: Stepan Razin's Dream, Man from a High Hill and The Hero's Exploit
First studio recording:This recording was made just after its world premiere on November 11, 1937, but had not been released for a long time outside the USSR until BMG Japan reissued its compact disc in 1998. Melodiya does not have its original source any more.
Appointment as chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra: Mravinsky was appointed as chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra promptly after the First USSR Conductors' Competition in September 1938, where he won the first prize (See APPENDIX 2.).
First concert as chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra: The program of this concert on October 18, 1938 was:
Mozart: Der Schauspieldirektor: Overture
Musorgsky: Khovanshchina: Prelude
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5
Second studio recording: Very recently BMG Japan/Melodiya released for the first time the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 which wasrecorded just after Mravinsky became the Chef. This recording was originally recorded on optical soundtrack.
First live recording: Mravinsky participated in the first Spring Festival in Prague and conducted the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Khachaturyan's Piano Concerto with Lev Oborin (he made its world premiere), Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 were performed.
Last studio recording: The Shostakovich Symphony No. 12 was premiered by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic on October 1, 1961 in Leningrad. This last studio recording seems to have been made just after the world premiere, but its exact date is unknown. Why Mravinsky stopped making recordings in studio is not clear.
Last live recording: At this moment this recording is the last one so far. Triton video DMEC 18008 (dated 1984/4/29) is identical with Russian Disc RDCD 10912, where Mravinsky looks fairly healthy.
Last concert: The recording of this concert is preserved? As far as the compilers know, before this concert Mravinsky gave the concert on November 30, 1986 where he performed excerpts from the Wagner operas.
Death: Mravinsky had been ill in bed during the latter half of 1987, and was sent to a hospital in Vienna at the end of that year. He returned home on January 3, 1988. When Mrs. Mravinsky saw the bill from the hospital, she felt her hair stand on end because they had not enough foreign currency. A representative of Der Wiener Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde kindly said "You need not worry about that. We will pay it on behalf of you, as our great gratitude to the maestro's music." (Memoirs about Mravinsky by Midori Kawashima from the Japanese translation of Fomin's Yevgeni Aleksandrovich Mravinsky) He died at home from a heart attack at the age of 84.
Most recorded work: From 1932 to 1982, Mravinsky performed the Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, 113 times with the Leningrad Philharmonic. The second most is the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, 102 times.
Most issued work: Svyatoslav Richter did not play so often in concert with Mravinsky. After Mravinsky's death, however, Richter gave many recitals in Europe and Japan to his tribute, saying that "the recital this evening is dedicated to the greatest Soviet-born conductor of this century, the late Yevgeni Mravinsky." Also, according to Midori Kawashima, who had worked for a long time as a Russian-Japanese interpreter for both Mr. and Mrs. Yevgeni Mravinsky and Mr. and Mrs. Svyatoslav Richter, Maestro Richter strongly insisted that the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra should crown the name of Yevgeni Aleksandrovich, which was never realized.

INTRODUCTION
Yevgeni Aleksandrovich Mravinsky (1903/6/4 St Petersburg-1988/1/19 Leningrad) was chief conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra (whose full name is the Leningrad State Philharmonic Academy Symphony Orchestra, named after Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich, Honored Collective of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic) for more than forty-nine years until his death. His nearly half-century career as chief conductor of a symphony orchestra is comparable only with Willem Mengelberg at the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam and with Ernest Ansermet at L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He conducted mostly the Leningrad Philharmonic, though he also made recordings for the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Moscow Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in 1940s and 1950s. The only foreign orchestra he ever conducted was the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Mravinsky is the man who stuck to one orchestra, one city, and one concert hall.
Mravinsky left 102 commercially issued recordings, 54 studio recordings and 48 live recordings, during he was alive. The first recording was the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 recorded in 1938 just after its premiere by Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
Though he made studio recordings in 1940s and 1950s, he stopped making them in 1961. Almost all of these recordings were manufactured and issued by Melodiya, the monopoly company of the Soviet Union. Considering his magnificent career, the number of his recordings released was extremely small. Furthermore, it is very strange that many recordings were released more than two or three years later after they were recorded. For example, a series of 1965 Moscow live recordings were first released in 1971. The reason why Mravinsky stopped making recordings in studio in the early 1960s and why Melodiya's issues of Mravinsky's recordings were untimely are not clear. Probably Mravinsky himself did not like making recordings and Melodiya had a Moscow-centered policy.
Since his death in 1988 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of his previously-unissued recordings have been released on various labels, the number of which is now about 140.
Most of them are seemed to have come from broadcasts. Among these new issues, specifically noted recordings are those released by BMG Japan/Melodiya, which include the reissue of the 1938 Shostakovich 5th Symphony (this recording was issued only on a 78rpm set before), early studio recordings with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, and several 1972 Moscow live recordings.
Aleksandr Nevzorov, Mravinsky's last pupil, investigated unissued recordings in archives of Leningrad and Moscow, and wrote about them in an article, "'Emperor Yevgeni' or 'Type of Modesty'?" in Melodiya No. 2, 1990. Most of unissued recordings listed by him have been released by Russian Disc and BMG Japan. The most important recording listed by Nevzorov which has not been yet released is the world premiere of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with Mstislav Rostropovich.
This updated Mravinsky discography and other materials is a revised version of the following discographies which we have published:
1st Edition: Kenzo Amoh, Frank Forman and Hiroshi Hashizume, Mravinsky Discography, Japanese Mravinsky Society, Osaka, 1993 March.
2nd Edition: Frank Forman and Kenzo Amoh, "Evgeni Mravinsky Discography," Journal of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, 1994 Spring issue
3rd Edition: Kenzo Amoh and Frank Forman, Legacy of Yevgeni Mravinsky: Discography, liner notes in Japanese for Volume 1 of a set of Mravinsky's previously unissued recordings, BMG Japan BVCX 8020 - 8023 (a four CD set issued 1998 May). Contains an abbreviated version of the discography and includes only first issue and compact discs currently available.
Making a discography is a maddening process, but especially so in the case of Mravinsky, since different issues of what turns out to be the same performance all too often bear different recording date on the record jacket or liner notes. This is especially true of CDs issued in the last five or six years on minor labels. Though many comparisons of recordings were made not only by the compilers themselves but by their collaborators, the discography and other materials still contain some ambiguities. Nevertheless the compilers believe it is 98 to 99 percent accurate. Not identified or verified items are noted. Also the compilers cannot verify whether or not each label is authentic, so all the commercially issued recordings were compiled. Comment and new information about Mravinsky's recordings is most welcome. Please write to or send e-mail to the compilers (Kenzo Amoh and Frank Forman).
Grateful acknowledgements are owed to several people: Aleksandra Mikhailovna Vavilina-Mravinskaya (the conductor's widow); Aleksandr Nevzorov (Mravinsky's last pupil and conductor, Moscow); Hiroshi Hashizume (Japanese Mravinsky Society, Kishiwada, Osaka); William D. Curtis (Newton, MA); Donald R. Hodgman (New York); Paul Miller (Los Angeles); Derek C. Hulme (Ross-shire, UK); Shuichiro Kawai (Tokyo); Hiroo Ohno (Tokyo); Midori Kawashima (Kodaira, Tokyo); Hisae Kobayashi (Tokyo); and to the following: Sarah Banks Forman (Mrs. Frank Forman), Jerome F. Weber (Utica, NY), Michael H. Gray (Alexandria, VA), Ryusuke Kozawa (BMG Japan), Naoya Hirabayashi (Chohu, Tokyo), Juris Grinevics (Latvian Academy of Music, Riga), Diana Grinevica (Mrs. Juris Grinevics), Peter Adamson (St. Andrews, UK), David G. Crighton (Cambridge, UK), Lawrence E. Friedman (Washington, CT), Pierre de Gavriloff (Paris), Jiri Jirak (Plzen, Czech Republic), Edmund Juszczyk (Chicago), Gilles Mercier (Suresnes, France), Philip G. Moores (Stafford, UK), Bruce Morrison (Kent, UK), John Riley (London), Goran Soderwall (Stockholm), Hiroshi Yasuda (Tower Records, Tokyo), and Katsushi Watanabe (Okayama).
General Notes
1. All records are stereo unless noted as monaural.
2. LPs are 30 centimeters (12 inches) in diameter records unless stated otherwise.
3. The orchestra is the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra unless stated otherwise.
4. Recording data are mostly based on each record. Some come from information from Aleksandr Nevzorov.
5. "<" before a recording date means that the exact date is unknown. The date given is the earliest date that restorers were known to have checked the recording. Aleksandr Nevzorov (Mravinsky's last pupil) estimates that the actual recording was made either on that date or any time during the preceding month.
6. Soviet LPs are numbered constructively on each side of the disc, instead of one number for the whole disc. In this discography, the disc number of each side is shown where known.
7. Issue date of Soviet records are mostly based on the table in Bennett's discography, if not otherwise attested on the disc or record jacket.
8. In case that recording data are discrepant between discs, Melodiya's data were adopted because their data are seemed to be most reliable, most of which show recording engineers as their evidences.
9. In this discography, date is shown on a Year/Month/Date basis, e.g., 1998/12/13 means December 13, 1998.
